← Back to the Turkey city atlas
This is part of the detailed Turkey city atlas for choosing where to live, relocate or spend a longer season. In Turkey, the exact neighbourhood, building, transport and registration situation matter as much as the city itself.
In this guide
Who is it suitable for?
Samsun is suitable for those who want the Black Sea, moderate summers, a big city without resort inflation, a university environment and a more relaxed budget.
Districts
Atakum. Best choice: embankment, cafe, university, modern houses, walks, sea.
İlkadım. The center, transport, shops, are denser and noisier.
Canik. More budget-friendly, requires targeted selection.
Where to be careful
Damp apartments, old buildings, areas far from the embankment without clear transport.
Housing
Humidity and heating are important. Atakum is more expensive, but more comfortable. Check the view not only of the sea, but also of the road noise.
Transport
The city is elongated, Atakum is convenient for everyday life. A car is useful, but not always necessary.
Cafe and food
Atakum waterfront: cafes, walks, breakfasts.
Center: lokanta, markets, regular city food.
Black Sea cuisine: pide, fish, corn bread, local breakfasts.
Clinics
Enough for ordinary life, university medicine. For complex issues – Ankara/Istanbul.
Little tricks
- The Black Sea is wetter and rainier than the Mediterranean.
- Atakum is the most understandable first district.
- If you want “beach Turkey”, Samsun may not give you that feeling.
