What it is and why go.
Seven Sisters are rolling white chalk cliffs on the East Sussex coast between Seaford and Eastbourne, inside South Downs National Park and Seven Sisters Country Park.
Compared with the White Cliffs of Dover, Seven Sisters feels wilder, more open and better for slow coastal walking.
Seaford Head
The postcard angle: cliffs, Cuckmere Haven and Coastguard Cottages in one frame.
Cuckmere Haven
The meandering river, beach and valley give the route its softer, slower mood.
Birling Gap
National Trust cafe, toilets, shop, beach steps and an easy bus exit.
Beachy Head
A dramatic chalk headland, lighthouse views and the final push towards Eastbourne.
How to get there from London.
There are two easy gateways: Seaford for the best west-to-east views, and Eastbourne / Birling Gap for a shorter, comfort-focused day.
London Victoria → Lewes → Seaford
Usually one change at Lewes. From Seaford station, walk around 20 minutes through town to the coastal path at Seaford Head.
London Victoria → Eastbourne
Direct train to Eastbourne, then bus towards Birling Gap / Seven Sisters Country Park.
Coaster 12 / 12A / 12X / 13X
Brighton & Hove Buses run along the coast. The 13X serves Birling Gap and Beachy Head, but winter frequency can be limited.
Taxi from station
Useful in winter, bad weather or if the bus timing does not work.
Route options.
West to east, Seaford to Eastbourne, is the default if you want the views opening ahead of you and a straightforward train home at the end.
The full classic: Seaford Head, Cuckmere Haven, Seven Sisters, Birling Gap, Belle Tout, Beachy Head and Eastbourne.
The best compromise: all the main cliff drama without needing to push to Eastbourne.
A shorter route with lighthouses, beach access, cafe facilities and a bus exit.
A gentler valley walk with minimal elevation, good when you want the coast without a full hike.
Viewpoints and photo stops.
Seaford Head
Wide cliff views with Cuckmere Haven and Coastguard Cottages in the foreground.
Cuckmere Haven
Meandering river, beach, birds, wind and a softer visual rhythm.
Birling Gap
Steps to the pebble beach, chalk textures up close, cafe and toilets.
Belle Tout & Beachy Head
Strong silhouettes and an easy story hook around coastal erosion.
Food, toilets and facilities.
Facilities are spaced out, so bring water and snacks. Use cafes as route anchors rather than assuming you can buy food whenever you want.
Saltmarsh Café
By Seven Sisters Visitor Centre, useful at the start or middle of the western route.
Birling Gap cafe
Cafe, shop, visitor centre, toilets and beach steps. Expect queues in peak season.
Tiger Inn, East Dean
A good village escape if you leave the coast for a softer finish.
Eastbourne
Fish and chips, cafes, pubs and a comfortable wait for the train home.
Seasons, tides and safety.
The cliffs are beautiful, but this is not a decorative city park. Chalk is fragile, cliff edges can collapse without warning and beach access depends on tides.
March–May
Fewer people, softer light, flowers and strong photo conditions. Dress in layers.
June–August
Warm long days, but busier. Start early if you want space.
Wind and mud
Quieter and atmospheric, but Birling Gap buses may be less frequent and paths can be slippery.
Stay back from the edge
Keep away from cliff edges and do not walk under the cliffs. In an emergency call 999 and ask for Coastguard.
Filming, drone notes and content ideas.
Good shots: POV walking on the ridge, the classic Seaford Head angle, Cuckmere Haven from above, chalk texture and beach steps at Birling Gap, Belle Tout and Beachy Head lighthouses. Best light is morning or golden hour.
Be careful with drones: much of the land is National Trust / South Downs, take-off and landing may need permission, and the UK Drone Code still applies.
If you are leading a group.
- The easiest meeting point is London Victoria for one specific train.
- For beginners, choose Birling Gap ↔ Beachy Head or Seaford → Birling Gap, not the full 21 km.
- Mark exit points in advance: Exceat, Birling Gap and East Dean.
- Leave buffer time for the last bus/train and use a second leader at the back of the group.
