← Back to the Turkey city atlas
This is part of the detailed Turkey city atlas for choosing where to live, relocate or spend a longer season. In Turkey, the exact neighbourhood, building, transport and registration situation matter as much as the city itself.
In this guide
Who is it suitable for?
Ankara is a practical capital: medicine, universities, embassies, government agencies, quieter than Istanbul, cheaper, less tourist chaos. Suitable for families, students, diplomatic/corporate environments and those who want to live in a more predictable city.
Not suitable for those who need the sea, wet greenery, resort style and “wow”.
Best areas
Cankaya. The main choice for foreigners. Kavaklıdere, Gaziosmanpaşa, Ayrancı, GOP, Tunalı, Bahçelievler – city life, cafes, embassies, schools, clinics.
Çukurambar. Modern homes, businesses, restaurants, families, cars.
Oran. Quieter, view houses, families, nearby Atakule/parks.
Ümitköy/Çayyolu/Yaşamkent. Family neighborhoods, modern complexes, schools, shopping centers. Need a car.
Bilkent. Universities, campuses, malls, tranquility, international environment.
İncek/Alacaatlı/Beytepe. Villas, new complexes, families, remoteness, a car is required.
Where to be careful
Ulus/Altındağ for permanent living are not always convenient for a beginner. Kızılay is convenient for transport, but noisy. Remote areas with no subway or car can feel isolated.
Where are there more foreigners?
Çankaya, Gaziosmanpaşa, Kavaklıdere, Bilkent, Çayyolu, Oran. There are many diplomats, students, teachers, and employees of international organizations.
Housing
Heating is more important in Ankara. Winters are cold. See merkezi ısıtma, kombi, insulation, windows. New family complexes are good, but they depend on the car.
Transport
There is a metro, but it doesn’t cover everything. Taxis are cheaper/easier than in Istanbul, but the city is sprawling. For Çayyolu/İncek/Yaşamkent, a car is almost a necessity.
Cafe and food
Tunalı Hilmi: cafes, shops, walks.
Arjantin Caddesi/GOP: expensive restaurants, expat environment.
Bahçelievler 7. Cadde: young and everyday city life.
Bilkent/Armada/Next Level: malls, meetings, restaurants.
Clinics
Ankara is strong in medicine: university hospitals, private networks, specialists. For families and complex diagnoses, this is one of the best cities after Istanbul.
Children and family
A very good city for families if you don’t need the beach. See Çayyolu, Oran, Bilkent, Ümitköy, Yaşamkent, İncek. Schools and clubs often define a neighborhood.
Little tricks
- Do not rent an apartment without checking the winter heating.
- In Ankara, “nearby” often means “close by car.”
- The best city if you want less chaos and more clarity.
