Cotswolds Itinerary From London: One Day, Weekend and Slow Routes
Simple Cotswolds routes that do not try to squeeze six villages into one exhausting day.
One-day classic route by car
Start with Burford, continue to Bibury, have lunch in Bourton-on-the-Water, walk to Lower Slaughter if you have time, and finish in Stow-on-the-Wold for late afternoon light. This is already a full day. Do not add Castle Combe unless you enjoy spending the whole day in the car.
One-day car-free route
Take the train to Moreton-in-Marsh, bus to Bourton-on-the-Water, walk to the Slaughters, then continue to Stow-on-the-Wold if the bus timing works. This gives you river, village, walk and market town without needing to drive.
Slow weekend route
Base yourself in Broadway, Bourton-on-the-Water, Winchcombe or Stroud. Spend day one on the classic villages and a short walk. Use day two for something more specific: Broadway Tower, lavender in summer, a farm-shop route, or the quieter southern Cotswolds.
Two route styles
If you want postcard Cotswolds
Bibury, Bourton, the Slaughters, Stow and Broadway.
If you want fewer people
Stroud, Painswick, Minchinhampton, Northleach, Naunton, Blockley and Stanton.
Best timing
Arrive at the most famous village first. Bibury, Castle Combe and the Slaughters are best early. Save busier towns like Stow or Broadway for lunch or late afternoon.
