This is part of the detailed Turkey city atlas for choosing where to live, relocate or spend a longer season. In Turkey, the exact neighbourhood, building, transport and registration situation matter as much as the city itself.
In this guide
Who is it suitable for?
Konya is suitable for those looking for budget, order, family, conservative environment, study or a quiet life. This is not a city for parties and expat community.
Districts
Selçuklu. The most convenient modern choice: university, tram, new houses, families.
Meram. Greener and more prestigious, family-friendly, calm.
Karatay. More historical, cheaper, but very different regionally.
Where to be careful
If you’re looking for a socially active environment, parts of the city may seem closed off. It’s difficult without Turkish.
Housing
Prices are lower. Look at the heating, the distance to the tram, the quality of the house. It’s cold in winter.
Transport
The tram is important. The city is wide, the car is useful.
Cafe and food
Mevlana area: tourist area.
Selçuklu: cafes, malls, student food.
Local food: etli ekmek, fırın kebabı.
Little tricks
- Good city for budget and Turkish language.
- A bad choice if you need an alcoholic nightlife and an international party.
- Family and calm, but socially more conservative.
