This is part of the detailed Turkey city atlas for choosing where to live, relocate or spend a longer season. In Turkey, the exact neighbourhood, building, transport and registration situation matter as much as the city itself.
In this guide
Who is it suitable for?
Fethiye is suitable for those who want nature, sea, tranquility, British-European expat environment, yachts, trekking, family or retirement rhythm. This is one of the best cities for a beautiful, but not metropolitan life.
Districts
Fethiye Center. Practical: marina, shops, market, doctors, transport. Not always a beach vibe, but comfortable all year round.
Çalış. Beach, promenade, sunsets, foreigners, cafes. Good for the first start.
Taşyaka/Tuzla. More residential areas, cheaper, closer to the center, less resort-like.
Ovacık/Hisarönü. Expats, villas, mountain air, proximity to Ölüdeniz. Hisarönü is more touristy and nocturnal, Ovacık is calmer. It’s quieter in winter.
Kayaköy. Atmosphere, nature, houses, you need a car, not for everyone.
Göcek. Yachting, expensive, beautiful, smaller than ordinary city life.
Üzümlü. Cheaper, country style, tranquil, need a car.
Where to be careful
Seasonal areas where cafes and services are closed in winter. Villas without proper heating. Houses are far from the center without a car.
Where are there more foreigners?
Çalış, Ovacık, Hisarönü, Göcek, partly the center. There are many British, Europeans, and Russian speakers.
Housing
Check heating, humidity, internet, water, road to home, insects, villa/complex manager. Villas have many hidden costs: garden, swimming pool, chemicals, cleaning, heating.
Transport
Dolmushi work, but a car is very desirable. For Çalış/center you can live easier, for Ovacık/Kayaköy/Üzümlü – a car is almost mandatory.
Cafe and food
Çalış promenade: breakfasts, bars, sunsets.
Paspatur/Old Town: tourist cafes, shops, evening.
Marina: restaurants, walks.
Kayaköy/Üzümlü: country breakfasts, local places.
Clinics
For basic life it is enough, but for complex medicine they often go to Antalya/Izmir. There is dentistry, expat services are developed.
Little tricks
- If you want year-round living, choose closer to the center or Çalış.
- Ovacık is beautiful in summer, but check the winter silence.
- Check the costs for the villa before signing.
- Fethiye is easier to adapt to than many small resorts.
