Who is it suitable for?
Bodrum is suitable for people with a high budget, lovers of the sea, yachts, restaurants, villas, aesthetics and seasonal social life. This is not a cheap resort, but an expensive peninsula with very different villages.
Districts
Bodrum Center. More lively all year round, marina, shops, restaurants, transport. More noise and tourists.
Yalıkavak. Prestige, marina, expensive restaurants, villas, foreigners. Beautiful, but expensive.
Gümüşlük. More creative and relaxed atmosphere, fish restaurants, sunsets. It’s quieter in winter.
Bitez. More family friendly, beach, cafe, closer to the center, good balance.
Ortakent. Families, beaches, quieter life, nice houses, a little expensive.
Turgutreis. More accessible, marina, west of the peninsula, many foreigners.
Türkbükü/Göltürkbükü. Luxury, summer party, expensive.
Gündoğan. Calmer, nature, sea, permanent life is possible, but you need a car.
Where to be careful
Too remote villas without a car. Houses without heating. Summer villages where there is almost nothing in winter. A rental that they want to vacate for the summer.
Where are there more foreigners?
Yalıkavak, Gümüşlük, Turgutreis, Bitez, Bodrum Center. There are many British, Europeans, wealthy Turks and Russian speakers.
Housing
Main issues: heating in winter, water, internet, road, parking, seasonal rental conditions. Sea views may mean difficult access and dependence on a car.
Transport
There are dolmushi, but for a normal life you almost always need a car. In summer, traffic jams and parking become a separate problem.
Cafe and food
Yalıkavak Marina: expensive dining, marina lifestyle.
Gümüşlük: fish restaurants, sunsets.
Bitez/Ortakent: beach cafes, family places.
Bodrum Center: bars, restaurants, marina, markets.
Clinics
For basic and secondary medicine it is enough, for complex treatment – Izmir/Istanbul. Dentistry and aesthetics are available, prices are higher than resort level.
Little tricks
- Spend a week in the winter before your annual contract.
- Don’t choose a village based on summer photos.
- For the Bitez/Ortakent family, Yalıkavak glamor is often more practical.
- Set a budget for a car, parking, home maintenance and air conditioning right away.
